Getting Ready for the California Audio Show 2017

The California Audio Show opens to the public tomorrow at the Oakland Hilton Airport and runs through Sunday. It promises a maximum of 45 rooms of exciting systems large and small, and yet on a scale intimate enough to have fun, explore and return to your favorite Exhibits, according to Constantine Soo, Show Producer.

From the registration area to the exhibition rooms, there was a flurry of activity today for set up. At any audio show, I am always amazed at the hard work it takes to turn rooms that are too big or too small into decent-sounding rooms where a group of people can listen to at the same time. So, I always like to share with you a few pictures from the setup day.

One of the best things about having my wife, Becky, become part of our show coverage is how she makes friends with everyone. Here she is making friends in the Margules rooms. From sharing favorite college football teams to Becky’s past trips to Mexico City for business, they had a good time getting to know one another. When we left their room, they were about to drive over to Customs at the San Francisco International airport to pick up their speakers. We hope the speakers arrived in good condition. The black amp below had already been unpacked.

Another interesting product in the Margules room was this console that I have to check out for our new master bedroom suite. In a way, it’s a modern version of the console stereos some of us grew up with, but there’s a world of difference in the sound. A lifestyle product, it offers a lot of flexibility for enhancing the sound quality for almost any source.

Now, these are what I call some serious crates from Martin Logan. I can’t imagine unpacking them.

One hour later, progress is being made in some rooms.

Audio-Technica and Tube Traps are setting up

Volti Audio is here! We didn’t get into their room, but we saw the boxes in the hallway.

In the Zesto room, they were a little ahead of some and tuning in their system.

It’s good when the show producer helps you set up your room.

Can you name this VPI turntable?

Exogal was about as ready as any room we saw, and their system was already sounding nice.

I hope you can make it to the show this weekend! You can even plan to stay for a little entertainment with Allen Perkins of Spiral Groove in a Friday evening jazz concert! The Hump Day Jazz ensemble will perform hot jazz numbers from 7 to 8 pm in the International Ballroom, in Bldg IV. Say hello if you see us walking the halls. We would love to meet you in person! Jack (The Audio Beatnik) is part of the Meet the Press seminar at 9 am on Saturday if you’re there early enough to catch this presentation.
