In the House: PS Audio M1200 Monoblock Amps

Despite the hurricane in South Louisiana, the new PS Audio M1200 Monoblocks Amps arrived safely. They are currently breaking in at my house. These monoblocks use an unusual circuit design, and I’m looking forward to hearing what it sounds like.

The product announcement said, “The M1200 began as the dream project of PS Audio engineer, Darren Myers who wanted to build a power amplifier without bounds or compression on even the loudest of musical passages, yet equally at home reproducing the subtlest of details.”

The M1200 promises to preserve both uncompressed dynamics as well as the tiniest of nuanced details. It does this by taking advantage of a “cost-no-object” approach. The input stage is like that of a high-performance vacuum tube fed from its own analog power supply.

Product Design

The design aims to ensure that delicate input signals are faithfully preserved by the vacuum tube input. These signals are amplified without restriction using a new type of Class D output power module. According to sources at PS Audio, “This extraordinarily high current, low distortion, MOSFET output stage combines state-of-the-art topologies with decades of design and listening experience to produce what we believe is the most musically satisfying amplifier of its kind.”

That’s quite a promise! Stay tuned for an upcoming review of these in late October or early November.
